The TRUTH Bombs of nutrition!

After studying nutrition through various institutions and being mentored by some amazing clever practitioners it became abundantly clear that there many ways to skin a cat so to speak.

There was no one right way for ANYONE – no wonder so many people were confused as every expert proclaimed their was the right way.

So after studying, being mentored, clinical and private practice observations, the following truth bombs where identified.

@skincat

Truth Bomb #1

We are all biochemically so unique, there is no one single approach for everyone. What works for one, may not work for another. And I love the quote by Ann Wigmore:

“One man’s medicine can be another man’s poison”

There is however a blanket principle to follow and that is WHOLEFOOD ONLY! We all have a unique food prescription and with time and observation you can very quickly find out what your is.

This is easily done by utilising a food and symptom diary for 3-5 days to get a clear indication of culprit foods.

 Truth bomb #2

Any symptom you have can be the result of a food intolerance. So by using the above suggestion you can easily identify the culprit food and tweak accordingly whilst you heal the deeper imbalance with a qualified practitioner.

Remember, removing the food alone is the not the answer, this just provides symptom relief whilst you heal at the core foundational pillar level

 Truth bomb #3

There are over a 25 different healing protocols and trying to decide which one to use based on symptoms can be tricky and complex IF you are not working with a qualified practitioner.

Using the suggestion of a food and symptom diary will save a lot of heartache and stress and get you on the road to recovery far quicker

 Truth bomb #4

Whilst nutrition is definitely the portal to wellness and is critical, there are other pillars which also require your focus to achieve long lasting health and happiness for you and your family. Think about it like a checklist for health.

For this simple truth, I have created the TOTAL HEALTH TRANSFORMATION PROGRAM that can be accessed via 2 ways:

  1. 6 week LIVE GROUP

  2. 1:1 12 week VIP

Both of the programs cover in depth the core foundational pillars that build health:

  • Nutrition

  • Gut health

  • Toxicity

  • Emotional Wellbeing.

It is not enough to just know, but to BE and DO as well consistently over a period of time so that it can be become a lifestyle change and a way of life.

What does it mean to have a coach?

Coaching in all arenas of life is on the rise and I think it is a smart decision to invest in having a coach to achieve your desired goals. Knowing the information or what to do is ONLY 1 piece of the puzzle, but it's about taking consistent action with that knowledge.

This is where most people get stuck for a host of reasons, but mainly because:

  • Lack of clarity and purpose, i.e. the WHAT & WHY changes are needed

  • Lack of tailored plan, i.e. the exact steps to get you from A to B

  • Lack of accountability & support to keep you on track and course correct

The main aim of coaching is to:

coaching-.jpg
  • Help you generate self responsibility, i.e. accept that the hard work ahead is yours and that learning and creating new habits may need to happen in order to achieve their desired goal

  • Raise awareness of how life could be different IF you achieved your goal OR if everything stayed the same. The main aim is to help you dream and design your new life as if your goals have been achieved

  • Illicit positive behavioural change, however this change starts in your mind and is often the biggest hurdle to overcome. The coach is also there to help you become the person you need to be in order to achieve your goals, this follows the concept of BE DO HAVE, i.e. Be the person you need be NOW, Do what is needed to achieve and the HAVE your desire.

  • Empower and build confidence in you so that you can make the necessary changes without overwhelm

The elements of having a coach:

consulting.jpg
  1. The success of a partnership between me the coach and you the client is based on the relationship and rapport. In a coaching relationship, there is no hierarchy, we both operate from a level playing field

  2. The coach is there to provide structure to the conversation and provide a line of questioning that will help YOU identify the pathway forward. All the answers are within us, sometimes we just need some help sifting through all the noise in our head

  3. The coach is there to provide accountability for you. Quite often you already know what you need to do and don’t need to be told, but it is having someone to be accountable that helps you take that action needed.

  4. The coach is also there to provide a level of expertise in a chosen area of specialty. This is done in an empowering way and is not meant to be prescriptive. In my case, my chosen area of special interest is gut health and helping mum’s rock life without overwhelm given the stress of this modern day life.

  5. Lastly and most importantly, the coach is also there to support and guide you to achieve your goals using a structured approach.

All the above is quite general to coaching, so how does that relate to me as a Nutrition & Wellness coach? As I mentioned before, my area of special interest is gut health and helping mum’s become the captain of their ship using proven transformational wellness practices.

Obtaining transformational change is very difficult to do in 1 session, therefore I’ve designed 2 main 1:1 programs to achieve this:

  1. 6 week 1:1 Thriving Families – this purely focuses on Nutrition and aiding the switch to real wholefoods in small bite sized chunks.

  2. 12 week: Healing with wholefood – this program truly is my babe and focuses on change in the 4 core pillars of health, i.e. nutrition, gut microbiome, toxicity and emotional wellbeing. No stone is left unturned in this program.

The above 1:1 programs will be offered as a group in the 2nd part of the year and the investment will be much lower.

I also understand that sometimes, you need to dip your toe into the water before making that investment, so I also have a 90 Minute Nutrition & Wellness Audit. The purpose of this session is to:

  • Help you identify your what & why for health & wellness

  • Design a plan for you to create this so that you always know your next step

  • Perform an audit of your nutrition & wellness and provide recommendations and suggestions for improvement.

If you are feeling stuck on your journey and not sure of your next step, please reach out and schedule a complimentary 30 chat to see if any of my programs are a fit for you.

5 Easy Ways to get Healing Foods into your kids without fuss!

Getting healing foods into you or your child daily does not have to be a struggle. In fact when you re-adjust your mindset to that of wholefoods ONLY, it’s just something you do on a daily basis and then it does not become a “thing”

Many of the types of foods are consumed on a daily basis anyway, so it’s just a matter of thinking how can I make this more nutrient dense and add a healing agent food.

Below,  I’ve given you 5 easy ways of getting healing food into the diet on a daily basis:

1. Smoothie

Who doesn’t love a good smoothie? This is a fabulous food to get extra nutrition into your child without them necessarily knowing the goodness included

Types of extra goodness to that can be added:

  • Use non dairy milk alternatives such as homemade nut, seed or coconut milk varieties

  • Probiotics – they wouldn’t even know! Just make sure it's good quality and broad spectrum

  • Clean protein powders or collagen hydrolysate for gut healing benefits

  • Whey – the liquid strained from yoghurt for probiotic goodness

  • Superfood powders, like these from Nutra Organics

  • Coconut oil or butter for cellular and gut health

There is just so much bang for your buck in a smoothie

2. Blissball

A great way to get awesome extra goodness into them such as protein, fat, fibre, zinc and magnesium by way of ingredients such as nuts, seeds & dates, cacoa and coconut oil or butter

Add extra goodness such as:

  • Hydrolysed gelation

  • A little turmeric

  • Superfood such as nutri organics

  • Soak the dates in some water kefir then you have a probiotic Blissball

3. Soups and casseroles

A wonderfully healing and great way to get veggies, slow cooked meats and broth into them that are tasty. Favourites for us are slow cooked lamb shanks and a root vegetable soup. Funny thing is my little man is not a fan of "eating" pumpkin but will happily have pumpkin soup, go figure! My princess on the other hand is not a fan of soup period, but loves Chicken Noodle Soup.....you just have to work with what you have :-)

4. Jelly or gummies

Who said gut healing food had to be all about broth. You can still get all the great properties of a broth in a jelly or gummy using a quality grass-fed gelatin. It is definitely not a replacement for broth, but an addition to.

Take it a step further add additional goodness such as:

  • Raw honey as a sweetener for amazing immune boosting anti-microbrial properties. It's still a sugar, so go easy :-)

  • Quality broad spectrum probiotic capsules and you have a probiotic gummy

  • Herbal tinctures such as Elderberry syrup for wonderful immune boosting

  • Even use the gelatin to make custards, puddings and panacotta

5. Water

Who would guess water??? Amazingly you can ferment water with the right starter culture and then you have probiotic water, otherwise known as Water Kefir.

Ferment it a second time with a fruit of choice and you a flavoured probiotic tonic.

You can incorporate the above food daily as a guide:

  1. Breakfast: - Smoothie either but itself which is quite satisfying or alongside something like porridge pancakes. Recipe can be found in this blog post in the download

  2. Snack – Blissball – only need 1 depending on how big you make them

  3. Lunch/dinner – soup or casserole with a small probiotic drink

  4. Snack – a few gummies

I've put together the following recipes in an easy downloadable Ebook:

  1. Gummy

  2. Root Vegetable soup

  3. Blissballs

  4. Ginger probiotic tonic

  5. Water/Coconut Water kefir

What is a Nutrition & Wellness Coach

I used to get these perplexed looking faces when I answered the question “What do you do?” or “What is it you are studying?

I could see on their faces that they had absolutely NO idea what I was talking about, and I get that, I wouldn’t have either until I started searching what I could do with my passion & love of eating wholesome healing foods.

I desperately wanted to shout out from the roof tops what a difference it made to our family’s health and well-being and knew that if other families knew this information, they too could be encouraged to make small progress steps towards a wholefood/healing way of eating and experience abundant health.

That’s when I found the term a health coach or nutrition coach.

So, let’s delve a little deeper into what exactly a health coach is!

According to Wellness Coaches US, coaching is defined as;

“A close relationship & partnership with a coach, providing the structure, accountability, expertise and inspiration, to enable a person to learn, grow and develop beyond what he or she can do on its own”

A health & wellness coach focuses on mental & physical behaviours relating to nutrition, exercise & stress management. In my case, the focus is that of gut health and emotional well-being from a truly wholistic point of view.

It has also been defined that successful coaching takes place when coaches apply clearly defined knowledge and skills so that clients can draw upon internal strengths and external resources to make the necessary sustainable changes needed.

Any change in behaviour starts in the mind! It has been my experience that one of the biggest hurdles to overcome is clients believing in themselves & lacking confidence in their ability to actually make the changes they need to make.

“People are generally better persuaded by the reasons which they themselves have discovered than those that have to come to the mind in other”

Pascal Penses

Love this quote because it embodies what a successful coach is. That is, empowering the client so that they can come up with their own solutions rather than it spoon fed to them. It has also been proven that this idea promotes a longer sustainable change as the client will then take responsibility for making the necessary changes.

A nutrition & wellness coach does NOT diagnose or prescribe. This is the role of a qualified health practitioner.

In Summary, a health coach empowers and provides a line of questioning which is designed to help the client discover, dream, design & identify their strengths and potential solutions. The responsibility for initiating change lies with the client.

The coach provides the structure, goal setting & accountability. The aim of coaching is to generate self awareness & empower the client to take responsibility for change.
